Background:
We’re back with another review of Rocketfuelcoffee.com. This time, we are reviewing a lower priced bean, the Ethiopian Yirgacheffe. It’s an organic bean, and Lisa has dubbed it XXX.

The bean is shade grown, certified organic, and fair trade From the African forests of Ethiopia and Kenya, or the “Kaffa” region, coffee is grown wild here. This bean is Sidamo Yirgacheffe, picked and screen dry processed on raised beds.

Profile:
The Yirgacheffe bean is small in size and similar to a peaberry, while it carries a medium brown color and a dry exterior. On the grind, it shreds and separates rather than sticking together via oil. The aroma is very sweet with notes of cocoa and caramel and a medium aromatic finish that possesses a slight berry. On the pour, the flavors have melded and the overall aroma is a sweet nut.

On consumption, the Yirgacheffe is quite mild in body on first sip, but it develops in the finish, producing a more medium cup. The finish is excellent, with a sweet, thick, and syrupy texture that coats the palate. There is also some nuttiness present, which really complements the sweetness very well.

Synopsis:
This is an excellent cup, and is different from what I expected. Being listed as Yirgacheffe Bold, I was not expecting the smooth, medium finish, which was very pleasing. As the cup develops, the profile shifts and present an excellent array of flavors. Due to the moderate price, as compared to Rocketfuel’s other offerings, and the wonderful flavor profile, this ranks as my favorite offering to date. The flavor profile is right in my comfort zone and I really enjoyed my time with this bean.

By way of cigar pairing, I’d probably look to a dryer profile to balance the syrupy finish on the coffee. I’d also want a sweet Maduro, and so I’d probably elect the Ashton Aged Maduro or the Arturo Fuente Flora Fina Maduro.
