On June 6th, the anniversary of D-Day, Smoke Inn will release the latest cigar in its Microblend Series, the 601 La Bomba Bunker Buster from Espinosa cigars. A large launch party will be held at the Smoke Inn Casa de Monte Cristo in Boyton Beach, where to honor those who served our country, any active or former military will receive a free cigar and cocktail with a military ID. It’s nice to see the military aspect of the 601 Bunker Buster carried over to even its launch party.

The 601 La Bomba Bunker Buster by Erik Espinosa is a great addition to Smoke Inn’s Microblend series. It’s a well constructed medium bodied cigar with a perfect draw. With its mixture of cedar, oak, spice and coffee flavors the Bunker Buster has all the characteristics of a cigar that will age very well. Like all Smoke Inn Mircoblend cigars when it’s gone it’s gone, so if you’re a fan of Erik Espinosa’s cigars it’s worth stocking up while you can.

Pre-Light: The Bunker Buster is a well made box pressed perfecto with a shape reminiscent of actual bomb. An oily tan wrapper, with a color similar to dark dessert camouflage, sets off the dark green military themed band. The military theme is carried over to all parts of the cigar, and it’s a very cool looking cigar.

There is a leather, dried leafs and oak aroma comes from the 601 Bunker Buster wrapper, which brings back memories of watching cadet parades at the United States Military Academy when I was a kid. A sweet tobacco and oak flavor comes through on the cold draw.

Burn: The draw on the 601 Bunker Buster is smooth and easy, and is perfect to my tastes. I’ve never had a perfecto with such a good draw. The burn is even throughout, and the cigar holds an impressive ash.

Flavor: Starting off there is a mellow sweet cedar and a slight herbal flavor. On the retrohale there is a significant amount of spice up front during the first half inch of the cigar. An inch in there is a very mild cinnamon and note that mixes well with cedar, white pepper, coffee, cocoa and graham cracker. There is a good deal of woodsy flavors to this medium bodied cigar. At the halfway point of the 601 La Bomba Bunker Buster is dominated by a sweet cedar flavor as the cinnamon and spice become more prevalent. At the transition to the final third of the cigar a slight saltiness occurs salty, but not in an unpleasing way. Mild cocoa, coffee, oak, cinnamon, spice and herbs all mingle together nicely during the final third. There is a pleasing coffee and cedar finish to the cigar in the last inch of the Bunker Buster.

Overall: The 601 Bunker Buster is a woodsy medium bodied cigar that is quite good. Milder than the other cigars with the La Bomba name, the cigar has a good deal of flavor in a small size. Smoke Inn’s Microblend series has had some great cigars like the Quesada Oktoberfest Dunkel and the Room 101 Big Delicious (both of which made our Top Ten of 2013 list), and the 601 La Bomba Bunker Buster is no different. I first tried the Bunker Buster at the Great Smoke Pre-Event Dinner, and the cigar has only gotten better in the humidor over time. Since that night, Erik Espinosa has been aging the rest of the 601 Bunker Busters in cedar which should only serve to enhance the woodsy and spice flavors of the cigar. I’m a big fan of the cigars coming out of La Zona and the Bunker Buster is no exception. I will definitely be picking some up to add to my humidor.

Pairing: I’ve found that the Balvenie 12 DoubleWood pairs very well with the 601 La Bomba Bunker Buster. Pretty much any Balvenie single malt will compliment the woodsy notes in the Bunker Buster. A Hudson Bourbon is another good pairing choice with this cigar.

On a side note: The two most requested items from our brave soldiers abroad are cigars and Starbucks coffee. Smoke Inn’s Gars for Gunners Program is a great way to show your support for those men and women who give so much to protect our freedoms. Your selections will be sent directly to deserving servicemen, with shipping costs being fully covered by Smoke Inn, and a personal note will be included to let the troops know that you care.
