Zino Platinum has been trying to lay claim to the urban cigar smoking gentleman lately; first with the Zino Toro X and Make of New York, and now with the Make of L.A. Only 3,000 boxes (750 of each design) of 10 cigars are being released. The flavors in this cigars are some of my favorites. It’s as if Zino took the best parts of the Davidoff Millenium Blend, Zino Chubby Special Wrapper and Davidoff Puro D’Oro and created something new. What’s really wonderful about the Zino Make of L.A. is that it is basically a Davidoff at a Zino price.

Pre-Light: Like most Davidoff cigars, the construction on the Zino Make of L.A. is impressive. The tan wrapper looks appetizing against the gold and black Zino band. There is a slight tingle on the lips that is similar to that experienced when smoking a Davidoff Millennium Blend. Off the unlit cigar, a leather and natural tobacco aroma is noticeable. The pre-light draw is perfect with a spice and cedar flavor coming through.

Burn: The draw on the Zino is smooth and easy; it’s perfect to my personal preferences. Even burning from start to finish, there is no need for touch ups with the lighter. The Make of L.A. holds its ash quite well, and produces a good deal of flavorful smoke.

Flavor: From the start there is a pleasing sweet flavor that is hard to define. That sweetness soon turns to cedar and a hint of spice. An inch into the Zino Make of L.A. a musky leather flavor picks up and mixes with sweet cedar, grass, citrus and and a mild herbal spice. The second third sees the leather and cedar take precedence, with citrus, grass and herbs in the background. In the final third, sweet spice becomes more apparent. Musky leather, sweet cedar, oak and hay are all present through to the end of the cigar. Make of L.A. is a hard cigar to put down.

Overall: The Zino Make of Los Angeles is a flavorful medium bodied cigar that is certain to please fans of Davidoff cigars. I’m a big fan of Davidoff’s cigars, and am quite impressed by what they’ve done with the Zino brand during the last few years. There’s a great mix of leather, cedar, musk and spice that should make this a cigar age quite well. This is a cigar worthy of a spot in any gentleman’s collection and worth holding onto for some time. I personally have a few boxes aging in my locker at my local Zino Platinum Lounge.

Even though I greatly enjoyed this cigar I do have one major complaint; with the exception of size and packaging, it’s the exact same cigar as the Zino Make of New York. As someone who’s lived in both New York and Los Angeles, I can attest to the fact that they’re cities with two completely different feels to them. It’s my feeling that the difference between those cities should be reflected in the blending of the cigar. I found it quite disappointing that this was overlooked by the people behind these cigars.

Pairing: When pairing the Zino Make of Los Angeles quality Speyside single-malt is the best choice. The Balvenie 17 DoubleWood, The Balvenie 21 PortWood, Cardu 12, Glenfarclas 25 and The Macallan 15 all pair quite well. For those who wish to stick with the New York theme, the Hudson Single Malt is also a very good choice. I personally like to pair this cigar with the Camus Ile de Ré Fine Island Double Matured Cognac. The Zino Make of L.A. is a cigar that pair well with a wide selection of beverages.
