It seems like every few years there is a price increase in the cost of cigars. (Primarily due to regulations and taxes.) So it is a relief to see a high quality cigar released at a reasonable price. That is exactly what Dion Giolito and Illusione Cigars have done with the Illusione Rothchildes. A small cigar that burns slow, the Rothchildes is surprisingly complex and flavorful for its diminutive size. Lots of sweet cocoa, nuts, leather, pepper and salt make for a pleasing mix of flavors. This is one of those cigars that will be hard to find simply due to its price and quality.

Pre-Light: The Illusione Rothchildes is a good looking little cigar. The San Andres wrapper is unusually oily and smooth with only a few noticeable veins. A red, white and gold band is different from those on most Illusione cigars, and lends to this cigar a turn of the century look.

There is a earthy tobacco and leather aroma to the wrapper of the Rothchildes. A floral and sweat tobacco scent can be noticed from the unlit foot of the cigar. The cold draw lets through a fruity floral flavor along with cocoa and leather.

Burn: An easy draw allows through a good deal of flavorful white smoke. The burn is fairly even from start to finish. This is a slow burning cigar, so the small size is not really a factor. There is a pleasing floral aroma to the burning Illusione Rothchildes that makes it a pleasure to smoke inside a cigar bar or lounge.

Flavor: A chewy earth and cocoa flavor starts off the first third of the Illusione Rothchildes. Sweat chocolate, leather, earth and salted almonds are the main flavors of that occur in the first third of the Rothchildes. The retrohale is dominated by powdered cocoa, but there is an underlying hint of mild black pepper. During the transition to the second third of the cigar the chocolate flavor morphs into a milky hot chocolate flavor. The earth, almonds and leather flavors remain throughout the second third of the cigar. There is just a bit of mild pepper occurring at the halfway point of the Rothchildes that compliments the existing flavors nicely. The cocoa and leather become stronger in the final third of the cigar, and are joined by a black coffee flavor.

Overall: It may not be a big cigar, but the Illusione Rothchildes is quite impressive. Medium-full bodied and full flavored, there is a earthy cocoa flavor that dominates this cigar from beginning to end. It’s small size and reasonable price make the Rothchildes a great cigar for when you are on the go. Personally, I think the Rothchildes is a great cigar. The Illusione Rothchildes is an excellent everyday cigar. It may be hard to find because the quality and price means that plenty of cigar enthusiasts will be snapping them up. This cigar has all the hallmarks of one that will age quite well.

Pairing: When pairing the Rothchildes a cup of coffee or hot cocoa are the obvious choices. A glass of red wine also pairs nicely with a glass of Cabernet of Pinot Noir. If you are looking for something a bit stronger a Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban single malt will pair quite well with the Illusione Rothchildes.

On a side note: When Willy and I review cigars we don’t take price into account. What is reasonable for one person is often not for another. The Overall Rating is not affected by price. Still, I feel it’s important to mention the extremely reasonable price of the Illusione Rothschildes. I’ve found them at cigar shops all around the country for between $4.00 – $5.25. When most cigars of this quality are price in the $7-$10 range, it’s quite a relief to see high quality hand made cigar at such an affordable price.
