To celebrate five years of EPC Cigars Ernesto-Perez Carrillo has released the EP Carrillo 5 Year Anniversary cigar. It manages to be reminiscent of other Carrillo cigars while being something special at the same time. Everything about the 5 Year Anniversary is impressive. Fans of Carrillo cigars will certainly find it worth the money.

Pre-Light: A beautiful full color secondary band gives the Carrillo the look of something special. The Carrillo 5 Year Anniversary has a beautiful medium brown wrapper with a slight reddish marbling to it that gives it a very leathery look. A slight oily sheen to the Sumatran wrapper gives the EP Carrillo 5 Year an appealing look. Several prominent veins and seems are noticeable.

A mix of cedar and leather scents are noticeable from the wrapper of the EP Carrillo 5 Year Anniversary. Natural tobacco is the obvious aroma from the foot of the cigar. The cold draw is very easy allowing through flavors of wood and cinnamon.

Burn: The draw on the EP Carrillo 5 Year Anniversary is amazingly smooth and easy. The burn is a bit wavy at first, but it evens itself out in the second half of the cigar.

Flavor: Immediately there is a good amount of pepper to the EP Carrillo 5 Year Anniversary. This pepper is especially strong on the retrohale, and can be a tad overwhelming at first. As the cigar gets going the pepper continues to dominate while earth, wood and just a hint of coffee remain in the background. Entering the second third of the cigar, the retrohale mellows out just a bit. Black pepper is still the most significant note to the Carrillo 5 Year Anniversary. The pepper could be too much for some people. At the halfway point, the coffee flavor comes more significant. Like the rest of the cigar, the main flavors in the final third are pepper and coffee with some wood notes.

Overall: I must admit that I went into this cigar expecting something similar to past editions of the EP Carrillo Short Run, but instead I was surprised by a cigar that was completely different that anything that Carrillo has released lately. There is a good deal more strength than I was expecting from the cigar. Flavors of pepper, earth, wood and coffee are all present in spades. The flavors in cigar are so good that it makes me wish there was a little more complexity and development to it over time. Personally, I really enjoyed the Carrillo 5 Year Anniversary. I’d pick up a box and add them to my locker to age if my local shop hadn’t sold out of them so quickly. If you are a fan of EP Carrillo’s then the 5 Year is a must try cigar.

Pairing: The Carrillo 5 Year Anniversary pairs quite well with a Pinot Noir or Merlot. Personally, I find the Fess Parker Pinot to be a great compliment to this cigar.
