Football and cigars just seem to go together. Sport of any kind seems to pair well with a cigar almost as well as a great single malt. At La Flor Dominicana they have taken this relationship to the next level by releasing a special cigar in Arizona (home of this year’s Super Bowl) that is football themed. The La Flor Domicana Football Special Edition is a full bodied full flavored cigar that seems perfectly designed from smoking while watching the Seahawks and the Patriots in this weekend’s big game.

Pre-Light: The construction on the La Flor Dominicana Football Special Edition is extremely impressive. It is hard to miss the football on the wrapper of this cigar that is made out of several individual pieces of tobacco. The Ecuadorian wrapper is a dark reddish leathery shade of brown that is bit on the darker side. The Football Special Edition is firm to the touch, but is not what would be considered overly hard.

The wrapper has a leather aroma to it that brings to mind the scent of an actual football. Off the unlit foot of the cigar scents of raisins, sweet tobacco and coffee grounds can be discerned. The cold draw allows though flavors of sweet tobacco, nuts and a bit of spice.

Burn: The La Flor Dominicana Football Special Edition is a well made cigar with an extremely even burn that holds a beautiful white ash very well. Even through the football the burn is straight. The draw on the Football Special Edition is a little tighter than I typically like, but is not is smooth and lets through a good deal of smoke. This is an extremely slow burning cigar that takes some time to finish. (One cigar may last the whole length of the Super Bowl.)

Flavor: The La Flor Dominicana Football Special Edition begins with some immediate black pepper and cedar. Just below the surface notes is a subtle hint of cajun cooking spices. On the retrohale there is a mix of pepper and tangy spice that is not too overpowering. Thought the second third of the cigar there is a mixture of nuts, oak, cedar and just the occasional hint of pepper. There is a slight mellowing in the flavor profile during the transition to the final third of the cigar, while there is still a sweetness to it there is also a lack of any flavor that I can put a name to. As the final third begins there is a sudden meatiness to the La Flor Football with a mixture of coffee, cedar and earth flavors. In the final inch of the Football Special Edition there is a sweet tanginess and white pepper that mixes with the existing flavors.

Overall: The La Flor Dominicana Football Special Edition is a great idea, and this cigar seems to be the perfect cigar for smoking while watching the Super Bowl. The existing flavors are quite pleasing, but it is not an extremely complex cigar. The construction is phenomenal, and it is slow burning enough to last the entire length of a football game. While it is full bodied, the strength is not overpowering. It is a cigar that will par well with a beer and some barbecue during the game. Personally, I really enjoyed the La Flor Football Special Edition. Fans of La Flor Dominicana cigars are sure to enjoy the Football Special Edition. If I lived in the Arizona area I would be sure to pick up a box for next football season. Though they have not announced if they would, I think it would be a great to see this be an annual release from La Flor Dominicana Cigars.

Pairing: The La Flor Dominicana Football pair extremely well with a cold beer. I prefer a Newcastle, Monk in the Trunk or Sam Adams with this cigar. This cigar also pairs quite well with a peaty single malt such as a Lagavulin 16.

On a side note: There is no official tie between the NFL and La Flor Dominicana Cigars. I like the idea of a regional release just for the state where the Super Bowl is being held. I’d love to see this be an annual tradition that people look forward to in the way they do the Tatuaje Monster Series. Personally, I’m more of a college football guy and I’m still stoked from my team (Ohio State) becoming the first Undisputed National Champions.
