Cigar Review: La Aurora Preferidos Corona Especiales (Full Line)

Cigar Review: La Aurora Preferidos Corona Especiales (Full Line)

La Aurora / Miami Cigar & Co.
Country: Dominican Republic
Size: 5 1/2” x 42

For some reason, La Aurora seems to have gotten lost among so many newer boutique cigar brands, which is a great disservice to the oldest cigar brand from the oldest continually operating cigar factory. While they make many quality cigars, the Preferidos line is the crown jewel in the La Aurora crown. The latest entry to the line (released last year) is the Preferidos Corona Especiales for the Mid-Atlantic cigar market. These petite corona sizes seem to make a great addition to the existing preferidos line.

So, in an effort to showcase this special line of cigars, we decided to publish a special review of the entire line. Each cigar in the line has received its own short review.

La Aurora Preferidos Emerald Corona Especiales
Overall: 9.0
Wrapper: Ecuador (Sun Grown Sumatra)
Binder: Dominican Republic
Filler: Dominican Republic, Brazil & Cameroon
Strength: mild-medium
Pre-Light: The Ecuadorian Sun Grown Sumatra wrapper is smooth and oily with only a few prominent veins to it. Scents of leather, wood and cinnamon can be detected from the wrapper of the Emerald Preferidos. From the unlit foot comes subtle notes of sweet cinnamon, graham cracker and leather.
Burn: The draw if fairly easy, and this small cigar produces copious amounts of smoke. From beginning to end the burn is fairly even.
Flavor: The La Aurora begins with some nutmeg, leather, wood and spice. There’s wonderful pumpkin spice on the retrohale. The transition to second third of the cigar sees Arabic coffee joined cedar and spice as the main components of the profile. During the second third there’s leather, cedar, oak, natural tobacco and nuts. The transition to the final third sees a dominant nut, coffee and spice blend. Some mild black pepper begins to occur in the last inch and a half. The cigar finishes with plenty of cedar, spice and pepper.
Overall: The Preferidos Emerald’s Ecuadorian Sun Grown Sumatra wrapper is great in the corona size. This fairly complex mild-medium bodied cigar is certainly worth picking up when you get the chance.

La Aurora Preferidos Gold Corona Especiales
Overall: 8.8
Wrapper: Dominican Republic (Corojo)
Binder: Dominican Republic
Filler: Dominican Republic, Brazil & Cameroon
Strength: medium
Pre-Light: For a small cigar, the Preferidos Gold Corona has several large veins to it’s slightly reddish brown wrapper. The Dominican Corojo wrapper has a grass and cedar aroma to it. From the foot comes scents of sweet cedar, coffee and natural tobacco. An almost too easy cold draw allows through flavors of coffee, cinnamon and spice.
Burn: The draw on the Preferidos Gold Corona Especiales is a bit on the easy side, and allows through a lot of smoke. The burn is fairly even throughout the cigar.
Flavor: The cigar begins with strong cedar flavor, that tends toward the sweet side. Some herbal spice soon joins the existing cedar. On the retrohale there a mix of cedar, spice and nutmeg. The size makes the characteristic Corojo spice come through in a really wonderful way. Occasional mild black pepper. The cedar and spice continue in full force throughout the second third of the cigar. There’s an herbal note that occurs during the transition to the final third, and blends well with the existing cedar and spice. In the final third of the cigar some coffee notes begin to come to the forefront. The black pepper and spice mix with coffee and cedar through to the end.
Overall: The La Aurora Preferidos Gold Corona features a Dominican Corojo wrapper that lend some great signature corojo spice to the blend. Medium bodied with a good amount of cedar and spice, the Preferidos Gold Corona is a good cigar.

La Aurora Preferidos Sapphire Corona Especiales
Overall Rating: 8.8
Wrapper: USA (Connecticut)
Binder: Dominican Republic
Filler: Dominican Republic, Brazil & Cameroon
Strength: mild
Pre-Light: There is a hay and oak scent to the unlit foot of the La Aurora Preferidos Sapphire Corona Especiales. A hay and grain-like aroma can be detected from the cigar’s Connecticut wrapper of the cigar. The cold draw is fairly easy and lets through some hay and spice flavors.
Burn: Like all cigars with the La Aurora Preferidos name, this is a cigar that is superbly constructed. The draw on the cigar is very easy letting through a good amount of smoke. There is an even burn from start to finish.
Flavor: There is a bit of hay and oats to the beginning of the Connecticut Preferidos corona. A surprising amount of spice for a Connecticut shade wrapper occurs on the retrohale. Some Italian herbs and spices make an appearance and mingle with flavors of hay, oats, cinnamon and cedar. By the halfway point in the Preferidos is a burst of unexpected black pepper that mixes well with the flavors already present. At the transition to the final third of the cigar there is a mix of grass, oak, hay, vanilla cake and herbs that carry through to the end of the cigar.
Overall: Mild with a fair bit of flavor, the Preferidos Sapphire Corona is a tasty little Connecticut cigar. The Preferidos Sapphire blend as always been one of my favorite Connecticut blends. The Connecticut Preferidos Sapphire seems to hold up fairly well in the corona size.

La Aurora Preferidos Platinum Corona Especiales
Overall: 9.2
Wapper: Cameroon
Binder: Dominican Republic
Filler: Dominican Republic, Brazil & Cameroon
Strength: mild-medium to medium
Pre-Light: There’s a nice bit of oil to the light brown Cameroon wrapper of the Platinum Corona Especiales. Hay, wood and nut aromas came be detected from the wrapper. The unlit foot of the cigar has a mix of nut, hay and floral scent to it. On the cold draw cedar, spice, nuts and floral notes come through quite nicely.
Burn: The draw on the Preferidos Platinum Corona is smooth and easy allowing through plenty of smoke. For some reason, the Platinum is not the most even burning of the Preferidos line. There is a pleasing floral aroma to the burning cigar.
Flavor: The Cameroon begins with a mix of nuts, grass, pepper, as well as mild herbal spice. As the cigar gets going a barnyard hay note joins the existing flavors. On the retrohale there is a mix of pepper and spice with sweet cedar in the background. During the transition to the final third a wasabi pepper note comes to the forefront. Cedar, nuts, earth, pepper and spice all remain present throughout the second third of the Cameroon Preferidos. The transition to the final third of the Cameroon Preferidos sees whole grain toast, leather and cereal join the existing nuts and wasabi flavors. The Preferidos Platinum Corona Especiales is a very complex cigar.
Overall: Of all the blends that make up the Preferidos line, the Platinum lends itself best to the corona vitola. Mild-medium to medium bodied, the Preferidos Platinum Corona is a very complex cigar. It’s easy to see why this is my buddy Seth over at Cigar Federation’s favorite of the Preferidos line.

La Aurora Preferidos Ruby Corona Especiales
Overall: 9.2
Wrapper: Brazil (Sun Grown)
Binder: Dominican Republic
Filler: Dominican Republic & Brazil
Strength: medium-full to full
Pre-Light: The toothy mild chocolate brown Brazilian wrapper has a few prominent veins. From the wrapper of the cigar there are aromas of mellow wood and natural tobacco. From the unlit foot there’s cocoa and cinnamon notes. An easy cold draw lets through sweet cocoa, raisins and spice.
Burn: A perfect draw allows through lots of flavorful smoke. The burn of the Preferidos Ruby Corona can be a bit wobbly at times, but for the most part remains even without correcting. The ash clings firmly to the end of the cigar.
Flavor: Instantly upon lighting the cigar there is a mix of cedar and spice. As the fist third gets going there is the addition of powdered cocoa. There is a wonderful spice and herbs to the retrohale. The flavor profile is rounded out by natural tobacco, earth, cedar, cocoa and spice. There’s an interesting cedar and herb aftertaste. During the second third of the cigar the earth and cocoa dominate with spice and cedar in the background. A slight nuttiness begins to creep in from the halfway point on. During the transition to the last third the cocoa morphs more into a dark Swiss chocolate note. There is a bit of leather and nuttiness that mix with earth and dark chocolate during the final third. The spice that has been present throughout the cigar fades into a mild black pepper note through to the end.
Overall: The La Aurora Prederidos Ruby No. 2 Tubo has been one of my all-time favorite cigar blends for some time. While the corona is a great medium-full to full bodied cigar, the No. 2 (perfect) still seems like a better format for the blend. Still, even in the corona size it is an excellent cigar that is worth giving a try.

La Aurora Preferidos Diamond Corona Especiales
Overall: 9.0
Wrapper: USA (Connecticut Broadleaf)
Binder: Dominican Republic
Filler: Dominican Republic
Strength: full
Pre-Light: The Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper is very dark, and is a bit on the bumpy and veiny side, as one would expect from broadleaf. There is a sweet barnyard and cocoa aroma to the wrapper of the cigar that carried over to the unlit foot. An easy cold draw allows through cocoa, earth and barnyard notes.
Burn: The draw on the Diamond Corona Especiales is perfect, allowing through just the right amount of smoke. From beginning to end this is an even burning cigar in no need of touch ups.
Flavor: The cigar starts off very smooth with sweet cocoa flavors. Cocoa and nutmeg are the main flavors during the first third of the cigar. Some mild pepper occurs on the retrohale. During the second third of the cigar the cocoa remains strong while a charred wood note also begins to occur. There is a slight increase in pepper during the final third of the cigar, but it always remains behind the more dominant cocoa notes.
Overall: The La Aurora Preferidos Diamond Corona is certainly the most full bodied of the Preferidos line. The Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper gives a nice cocoa sweetness to the cigar. While the corona is a great cigar, it is even better in the Preferidos 5” x 54 No. 2 (perfecto) vitola.
