Espinosa Cigars has released an exclusive extension of their 601 brand at Famous Smoke Shop. The 601 Steel is a full bodied cigar that manages to be tough as steel, while still having decent flavor. Those enjoy very full bodied cigars such as the 601 La Bomba, will find the 601 Steel much to their liking.

Pre-Light: The 601 Steel is an interesting looking cigar, because it manages to look like part of the 601 line and completely different at the same time. I really like the pattern on the cigar silver part of the band, while the shape of the band gives it the look of a championship belt. The Nicaraguan Habano Oscuro Wrapper is a deep dark brown that makes the band of the 601 Steel all the more noticeable.

A mix of chocolate and earth can be picked up from the Habano Oscuro wrapper of the 601 Steel. From the unlit foot of the cigar there is an easily detectable sweet chocolate scent. A somewhat easy pre-light draw allows through flavors of chocolate, earth and leather.

Burn: When it comes to burn the 601 Steel is very impressive. This is an extremely slow and even burning cigar. The draw is great, and there is a lot of smoke production from the burning cigar.

Flavor: The 601 Steel “Rod” begins with quick burst of milk chocolate flavor that is soon joined by some generic wood and pepper notes. While there is pepper present it is fairly subdued, making for a mellow creamier flavor profile to shine through. On the retrohale, there is a wonderful interplay of pepper, cocoa and cedar. During the transition to the second third of the 601 Steel, cedar and mild leather notes become part of the flavor profile. By the halfway point there is a significant strength to the cigar, that somehow creeps up on you due to the flavor profile. Pepper, cedar chocolate and mild leather blend together nicely from the halfway point through to the end of the cigar. Towards the last inch of the 601 Steel, the pepper note increase in prominence slightly.

Overall: The 601 La Bomba is well know as a cigar as strong cigar, and the 601 Steel follows on that path. While the strength creeps on you in a subtler way that it does with the La Bomba, the Steel is certainly a cigar with a good deal of strength to offer the full bodied cigar smoker. While it is not an overly complex cigar, the flavor profile is quite pleasing with chocolate, wood, leather and pepper being the main flavor notes. Personally, I’m a big fan of Erik Espinosa cigars and the 601 Steel is not exception. This is good cigar to end the day with, and I will definitely revisit it again. Although we don’t take price into account in our overall rating, it has to be said that this cigar is a phenomenal value at under $7. If you’re a full bodied cigar smoker looking for a full bodied cigar, I’d head over to Famous Smoke Shop and buy it now.

Pairing: The 601 Steel goes very well with a sipping rum such as the Zafra 21. The scotch drinker will find the Dalmore 12 a good compliment to this cigar.
