In 1995, Rocky Patel launched entered the cigar industry, and began on a path to cigar stardom. To celebrate his first ten years in the business he released the much loved Rocky Patel Decade, which was followed five years later by the highly rated Rocky Patel Fifteen Anniversary. Now, to celebrate the company’s twenty years in business, the Rocky Patel Twentieth Anniversary was released at the 2015 IPCPR Trade Show in New Orleans. The cigar has been released in four box pressed sizes and in a lancero, and while all sizes of the Twentieth are quite good, the lancero really allows the cigar’s flavor profile to shine.

Pre-Light: The Rocky Patel Twentieth is a nice looking lancero. The large primary band has a black, white and gold color scheme featuring the Rocky Patel logo. A secondary foot band features the word “natural” on it. (Could this mean a maduro version is around the corner?) The  latte brown Honduran wrapper has small veins, a fair amount of oil and is finished off with a pigtail cap.

There is a mild powdered cocoa aroma can be detected from the Honduran wrapper of the Rocky Patel Twentieth Anniversary. Sweet chocolate and graham cracker scents are noticeable from the unlit foot. The pre-light draw is easy for a lancero and allows through flavors of chocolate, cedar and cinnamon. Something about the cold draw reminds me of s’mores made on a caping trip.

Burn: The burn of the Rocky Patel Twentieth lancero is perfect, and allows through a good amount of smoke. From start to finish the Twentieth Lancero is an extremely even burning cigar. The ash tends to fall of the Twentieth Lancero without warning, so make sure to keep an eye on it too prevent your clothes being covered in ash.

Flavor: The Twentieth Lancero begins with white pepper, cedar, hay, earth and hints of sweet cocoa. On the retrohale there is a very prominent mix of black pepper and cedar. An inch into the first third of the Rocky Patel Twentieth Lancero there is a slight coffee flavor that begins to mingle with the existing cocoa, cedar and with pepper. During the transition to the second third of the cigar there is a mellowing to the pepper. Cedar, oak, leather, sea salt, coffee and white pepper are all present during the start of the second third of the cigar. At the halfway point in the Twentieth Lancero, the character of the coffee flavor has changed to something resembling a strong espresso. As the cigar begins to burn into the final third, earth and espresso are the main flavors. Hints of cocoa, pepper and leather are present in the background of the flavor profile.

Overall: The 2015 IPCPR Trade Show in New Orleans saw several new releases from Rocky Patel Premium Cigars, and it’s been our opinion that it has been a great year for Rocky Patel. The Twentieth Lancero joins other impressive releases from Rocky such as the Sun Grown Maduro and Tabaquero by Hamlet. The Rocky Patel Twentieth Anniversary is a flavorful medium cigar that offers up a variety of cocoa, pepper, cedar, oak, leather, earth and coffee notes. Personally, I enjoyed this cigar, and have been smoking it regularly since its release. While all the vitolas in the line are quite good, the lancero really allows the flavor profile to shine. Rocky releases many of his blends in the lancero vitola, and it’s always nice to see a manufacturer release cigars in that underrated size.

Pairing: The Rocky Patel Twentieth Lancero is a cigar that will pair extremely well with a class of Pinot Noir. Those looking for something a little stronger will find a dram of Glenfarclas 12, Dalmore 15 or Balvienie 12 DoubleWood will all pair quite well with the Rocky Patel Twentieth.
