IPCPR 2016 Coverage – First Day In Sin City

It’s that time of year again. The annual IPCPR trade show, this year being held in Vegas. As I did last year, our coverage will be more of in the vein of a travel journal with plenty of news mixed in and my thoughts on some both the new products out there.

I flew into Las Vegas, and just happened to be on the same plane as the crew from Stogies World Class Cigars. The first thing I discovered upon arriving was that I had forgotten my camera in Texas, so I discovered the awesomeness that is Amazon Prime Now, and had a new camera dropped off in the lobby of the Venetian. Other than that, there’s never really much to report on arrival day. Instead I’d rather look ahead to what’s coming in tomorrow.

My thought is that Nick Melillo’s Foundation Cigar Company is coming off the success of the El Gueguense, and is following it up with a Broadleaf cigar known as The Tabernacle, that is likely to be as popular or more so than Foundation’s first release. Cornelius & Anthony, is the new company that I’ve been most impressed with, and I expect that the Venganza and reblended/rebranded Meridian will be as good as the Cornelius and Daddy Mac, that have been getting positive buzz. For some reason, people are finally beginning to catch onto 1502 Cigars, and the 1502 Blue Saphire is one of those cigars to watch. Whatever comes from Steve Saka’s Dunbarton Tobacco & Trust, Kyle Gellis’ Warped Cigars and Erik Espinosa’s Espinosa Cigars are all sure to be sought after. Finally, last year’s “Cigar of the Show” had to be the Matilde Oscura, so I’m personally looking forward to the Matilde Quadrata that Jose Sejas’ company will be releasing this year.

The looming FDA regulations are sure to be a big topic of conversation, and to be honest, everyone that I talk to seems to have a different opinion on the whole thing. Then there is the fact that the convention is back in Vegas, which may or may not help attendance, but will certainly help with the weather situation. (It’s sad when 113º is a comfortable option compared to 103º with 100% humidity.)

I’m going down to the Casino to gamble and smoke the new Espinosa Laranja Reserva H-Town Lancero. See you guys tomorrow.
