Anyone that follows this site regularly is like to be familiar with the H-Town Lancero Series, that is exclusive to Stogies World Class Cigars in Houston, Texas. These cigars have earned some high marks on our site. The H-Town Lancero Series has had some pretty impressive cigars, ranging from the La Palina H-Town to the Illusione H-Town. Few other shop exclusive lines can keep up such a high quality sting of releases (only Smoke Inn’s MicroBlends come to mind), but Stogies has managed to have amazing cigar after amazing cigar. So, what happens when the Espinosa Laranja Reserva, our No. 2 cigar on our Top Ten of 2014 List, becomes a part of the H-Town line? Well, you end up with one of the best cigars in the H-Town line.

Pre-Light: The Laranja Lancero is a beautiful addition to the H-Town Series. The Brazilian wrapper is a light brown shade with a nice oil to it. The orange, white and gold band is stands out nicely against the cigar’s wrapper, and on store shelves. A secondary H-Town band matches the primary band perfectly, though it does not contain the Stogies logo like many other H-Towns. Of all the H-Town Lanceros, in my opinion, the Laranja H-Town has the most appealing look.

There is a prominent hay aroma from the wrapper of the Laranja H-Town, with just a hint of a leathery scent also. From the unlit foot there is an interesting mixture scents including cedar, dried orange peel, cinnamon and spice. A very easy cold draw allows though grass, orange peel and floral flavors.

Burn: The Laranja Reserva H-Town by Espinosa Cigars is very even burning from beginning to end. A dark gray ash holds firmly to the end of the cigar. An excellent draw lets through massive amounts of smoke for a lancero.

Flavor: Right from the start they Laranja Reserva H-Town Lancero offers up a nice mix of white and black pepper. Soon there a mingling of cedar, earth, pepper and grass. There is just the right mix of pepper to sweetness. On the retrohale, white and black pepper are quite strong, but never reach the point of overpowering. During the second third of the Laranja Reserva H-Town there is a great creaminess that joins flavors of cedar, pepper, hay and earth. As the Laranja H-Town burns into the final third, there is a slight background vegetable note that is somewhat reminiscent of jalapeños. The pepper dies down slightly in the final third of the cigar. During the final third of the Espinosa Laranja H-Town there is a nice mix of white and black pepper, cedar, earth, hay, grass and the slightest citrus hint. (Although, Erik and Jorge both say the citrus is in my head.)

Overall: I love the cigars coming from Erik Espinosa’s La Zona Factory. And I love the cigars in the Stogies Exclusive H-Town Lancero Series. To have the two combined in a single cigar is an exciting prospect. The Espinosa Laranja Reserva is a great cigar, but the lancero is amazing. Medium bodied and with a great flavor profile, the Laranja Reserva H-Town Lancero is among the best in the H-Town Series. If it is not the best cigar, it’s pretty close to it. While the Laranja Reserva earned the No. 2 spot in our Top Ten Cigars of 2014 List, had the H-Town been out at the time it may likely have been the Cigar of the Year. Personally, I think this is a box worth (or couple box worthy) cigar. With a $8.50 retail price, which we don’t take into account in our Overall Rating, the Laranja Reserva H-Town Lancero is a steal. If you don’t live in Texas, you can still get the H-Town Lanceros by ordering them from Stogies World Class Cigars online.

Pairing: The Laranja H-Town pairs well with a wide range of alcoholic beverages. Everything from rum to red wine to woodsy single malts all pair nicely with the Espinosa Laranja Reserva H-Town Lancero.

On a side note: Readers may notice that we have a tendancy to review a fair amount of lanceros. It is due to the fact that both Willy and I are big fans of the lancero vitola (when done right). I was not always a lancero fan. For many years I eschewed the size. Willy got me to really give the lancero vitola a try, but it was Jorge Ahued of Stogies that really gave me that final push towards “lancero lover”. Stogies World Class Cigars has over 200 different lancero blends on the shelves. When an owner gets behind a brand or a vitola, it tends to reflect in his/her customers, and the love of lanceros by Stogies customers is a direct result of Jorge’s personal fondness for the size. While not every cigar makes a great lancero, when done right few cigars can match the flavor. The H-Town Lancero Series has lanceros of such high quality that it is hard not to develop a love for the lancero vitola after smoking several.
