Last year, Juan Cancel and Bill Ive’s Cubariqueño Cigar Company saw their Protocol Lancero make our Top Ten Cigars 2016 Honorable Mention List. It was quite exciting when they announced that the third cigar in the Protocol line would be a Connecticut cigar. Like other Protocol cigars, the Protocol Themis comes from Erik Espinosa’s La Zona Factory, and with cigars like the La Zona Connecticut or Espinosa La Crema, the factory did some interesting things with Connecticut cigars. The Protocol Themis is a great medium bodied cigar with and Ecuadorian Connecticut Shade wrapper that has a bit more “oomph” to it than the typical Connecticut cigar.

Pre-Light: The Protocol Themis is a beautiful looking Connecticut cigar, with a golden brown Ecuadorian Connecticut wrapper and a metallic gold Protocol band. The gold and black band and secondary band stand out nicely against the light Connecticut wrapper. The metallic band and golden foot ribbon give the appearance that this is something special from Cubariqueño Cigar Company, which it certainly is.

There’s a pleasant sweetness to the Protocol Themis’ pre-light aroma and cold draw. Its Ecuadorian Connecticut wrapper has a slightly sweet scent that is a mixture of honey and graham cracker. From the unlit foot of the cigar the sweetness continues with graham cracker, cinnamon and honey notes. An easy cold draw allows through notes of graham cracker, sweet honey, fresh grass, cinnamon and just a hint of something cola-like in nature.

Burn: The Protocol Themis Toro is a mostly even burning cigar that holds a beautiful white ash quite well. A perfect draw allows through plenty of flavorful smoke. In fact, the Protocol Themis puts out a massive amount of smoke.

Flavor: An instant burst of spice starts out the Protocol Themis Toro before quickly disappearing. Soon flavors of graham cracker, toast and cinnamon begin to occur during the first third of the cigar. On the retrohale there it a toasty sweetness that calls to mind a toasted ego waffle. As the Themis burns into the second third, a slight bit of pepper begins to occur on the palate. The graham cracker in the profile begins to mix nicely with flavors of oak, cinnamon, oats and mild pepper flavors. There is honey sweetness to the cigar’s second third, which plays well on the palate with the mild pepper note. During the transition to the final third of the cigar there is a slight uptick in both strength and pepper. The final third of the Protocol Themis is rounded out by  flavors of graham cracker, oak, honey, toast, as well as some pepper and spice.

Overall: In a year full of great Connecticut cigars, the Protocol Themis is a really great Connecticut cigar. This is definitely not your father’s Connecticut Shade cigar, because it finishes solidly in the medium bodied category. Construction of the Protocol Themis is top notch, with a perfect draw and an even burn. This is not you father’s Connecticut (which for my father is the My Father Connecticut), as it features a bit more “oomph” than the most older Connecticut cigars. Having had the opportunity to try both the robusto and the toro vitolas, it is the toro that really allows the cigar’s flavor profile to shine. However, the robusto was more even burning; what is an even burn in the toro is a razor sharp burn in the robusto. Due to the medium bodied profile, this may be one of those Connecticut cigar that isn’t right as a first cigar for the novice, but nearly everyone else will find something worth appreciating in the Protocol Themis. I’d definitely recommend giving this cigar a try. In fact, I was so impressed with it I sought some opinions from some good buddies of mine who each have different tastes in cigars, and the response was all the same. Headshrinker Gary, Don Number One, Tall Chris and Old White Steve all found the cigar to be as impressive as I did.

Pairing: When it comes to pairing the Protocol Themis with an alcoholic beverage, it pairs extremely well with a good sipping rum. Personally, I enjoy pairing the Kirk and Sweeney 12 or the Zafra 21 rums with the Protocol Themis. The single malt drinker will find the Balvenie 14 CaribbeanCask, Glenfarclas 12 or Dalmore 15 are all excellent choices for pairing with this cigar.
